Visiting Shillelagh

Shillelagh is an area of immense natural beauty with one of the largest remaining oak forests in Ireland – the Tomnafinnoge Oak Wood.

A path has recently been opened along the route of an old railway that leads to Tinahely. The railway originated in the 1860’s as the terminal of a brach line from Woodenbridge. It ran until 1944 when it the service was discontinued.

The tinahely walking festival covers this trail - launch april 2010, for more info click here >>

The area was part of the Fitwilliam estate – powerful landlords in the 17th Century. The Earl of Fitzwilliam rebuilt the nearby town of Tinahely after it was destroyed in the 1798 rebellion.

This area is part of the wicklow way trail and information on the route can be found on the excellent site (www.wicklowway.com) devoted to the trail here>>

Local amenities include horseriding, golf and fishing.

The area has recently been ’switched on’ in regard to having broadband internet in full operation.

Shillelagh montessori school is a new school to be based in the courthouse in Shillelagh and will open it’s doors in September 2007. The montessori school caters for children between 3 and 5 years of age on a sessional basis 5 mornings per week.
