Or for those looking to have the (hunting) time of their life the fairytale-like Humewood Castle offers an unforgettable experience with hunting / hill walking /and more. Humewood castle was of course, the home of Mr. Hume, MP of County Wicklow in 1803 and was the location of the famous rebel Michael Dwyers’ surrender.

It was agreed that he and his four lieutenants would be pardoned and with their families be sent to America. However, he was informed that he was being sent as a free man to the penal colonies of Australia.

Woodenbridge Wicklow
Woodenbridge Wicklow

Woodenbridge, Wicklow

Visiting Woodenbridge:

Woodenbridge is a popular tourist destination for those looking to take time out from the pressures of modern living. Hardly suprising when you see its located in the beautiful Vale of Avoca Co Wicklow with two rivers – the aughrim river and the avoca river meeting here (and again at the infamous ‘meeting of the waters’).

The Best Western run Woodenbridge Hotel and Lodge Wicklow, is a dependable place to stay or visit with entertainment in the bar most nights – particuarly in Summer but also throughout the winter. If the hired band/ singer doesn’t entertain you , rest assured that a few ‘ceoils’ from the Wicklow locals will! (what a sweet old man that sang when we were last there.!)

The Lodge is relatively new (2004) and is located across the road from the hotel. It houses 40 en suite rooms, lovely friendly staff and a very nice Italian restaurant. Food is also served in the hotel daily including bar food in the bar.
To view their website click here>>

Local Wicklow amenities comprise of such natural joys as fishing (brown trout populate the Aughrim river), golfing - the woodenbridge golf club Wicklow is directly across from the hotel, making it an ideal golfers’ break and fabulous forest walks – the nearby Glenart forest  Wicklow (now that’s natural to me) offers some truly memorable walks especially in late spring when the Rhodedendrons are in bloom.

Pony trekking, Shooting and Orienteering (Being a dog I am good at that as I have a great nose for trails and scents) are also popular amongst locals and visitors alike and the hotel offers the slightly unusual but enthralling package of a Wicklow Falconry stay where you get to spend a day doing falconry. Wow – I for one intend to try it out before the years’ end. As long as the falcon doesn’t use me as a catch!

Did I mention that this wicklow hotel is apparently the oldest in Ireland let alone Wicklow? (Don’t worry , they have updated their facilities). It dates from the 1600’s when it was originally a coach-house, ran all through the wicklow gold and copper mining period of the 17th century and is still going strong in the technological age that is today (big word for a small dog eh?). Well worth a wicklow visit.

Wicklow Town Wicklow
Wicklow Town Wicklow

Wicklow Town, Wicklow

Visiting Wicklow Town:

Wicklow town is located immediately south of Co Dublin on the east coast of Ireland. Known as the garden of Ireland, Wicklow boasts spectacular sandy beaches , colorful public gardens, all levels of walking trails and the attractive functioning wicklow harbour.

It is therefore no suprise that Wicklow town has found itself the subject of a property explosion to cater for the ever expanding irish population.Being serviced well by both bus and rail (although more trains would be welcome…) the town is easily accessible for commuters from dublin to wexford via wicklow train station and visitors alike.

It is here from wicklow harbour that the annual Round Ireland Yacht Race begins and ends and wicklow town also hosts a number of festivals throughout the year including wicklow drama, wicklow arts, the wicklow regatta and wicklows st Patricks day parade of course!

Wicklow town offers accommodation for the weary traveller in the form of wicklow hotels, country houses and bed and breakfasts. Wicklow’s ever increasing population (currently standing at 10,000), brings with it the benefit of an expanding cultural awareness and a variety of wicklow services and businesses to cater to the populations’ needs.

An example of such is the polski shop to the right of wicklow towns main street catering for the needs of our newest european residents from Poland, Latvia Estonia, Croatia, and Lithuania, plus the Wicklow Arts Club (for eg) often run informative cross cultural entertainment to suit every taste on wednesday evenings once a month in wicklow sailing club down at wicklow harbour.

For those who like to party there are many bars and pubs in Wicklow including Silvers nightclub in the Grand hotel, wicklow,  offers weekly wicklow disco fever as does its popular neighbour Nell Keenans, (previously the Olde Forge) not to mention the late bar in Ernies and the close by Clouseaus nightclub in Ashford Co Wicklow is serviced by minibus from the town thus enabling one to have a choice of where to shake their booty!

One of Wicklow towns most well known pubs in yers gone by – Phils, is unfortunately lacking in music but I guess the ever popular Bridge tavern makes up for it with live bands playing almost every night.

The many fine wicklow restaurants and cafes in wicklow town offer a more relaxing evening where you can enjoy the casual friendliness of a rural town mixed with the big city catering abilities of highly qualified chefs.

One fine example is sitting on the balcony (on a warm evening of course) overlooking the river as you enjoy your fine wine and great food in Rugatino’s restaurant  down on wicklow quay.
See our restaurants page for more details.. .

The three main publications for the town are The Wicklow People (every Thursday priced at approx €1.90); The Wicklow Times (Mondays – free of charge, tel: 01 2869111) and the latest newspaper The Wicklow News which is published every Tuesday.

Wicklow town has everything from hobby shops to bookies to shoe boutiques to wine specialists for the shopping lover in you.

Whatever your interest you can be sure that it is within or in close proximity to Wicklow town making it an ideal base for living or visiting this garden county of Ireland.

So go on, live life the wicklow way.
