Incidentally Vera was on to us looking for information on a new book launched recently that was mentioned on RTE – details of which are below for anyone else who was interested…

As avid walkers and lovers of the Wicklow Way my husband and I have a particular love of Newcastle, as the beach walk has been one of our most regular walks for nearly 30 years now.  We started going to Kilcoole beach when the children were small and progressed to Newcastle from there.

Approximately once a month, weather allowing, on a Saturday, we get the 84 from city to the terminus and walk down Sea Road to begin our walk back to Greystones, or Bray.  To be walking down Sea Road on a bright sunny morning is absolute heaven to us.  Its a world away from the city, and one can get there so quickly – we travel by bus from Drimnagh in less than 90 minutes.

We have brought relatives and friends with us also down through the years but mostly its just the two of us wandering along just soaking up the beauty of nature in this wonderful place.

Newcastle is a vibrant village situated on the coast road between Bray and Wicklow town. It is located close to the beach making it ideal for walking and shore fishing.

A very popular and family friendly place to visit in Newcastle is Sweetbank Farm located on the road to Rathnew. This idyllic looking fruit farm offers the vistor fresh farm grown produce from june to Sept such as apple juice and jams plus seasonal treasures to buy at very reasonable prices

The name Newcastle is derived from a castle built here by the Normans between 1177 and 1184 . The current ruin on the site is not that of the castle but of a second building later erected on the same site.

The church is owned by the Church of Ireland (Anglican) and is used also as the local Catholic church afeter it was agreed on 2000 to share it.

With a young population Newcastle is an energetic village with many sporting and social clubs such as the gaa, indoor soccer, tennis and badminton to name a few.

The Blackditch wood of which this website supports, is close by with over 220 acres of woodland and wetlands ideal for the nature lover and bird enthusiast. Birdwatch Ireland are currently seeking support in funding this conservation project – for more details see www.birdwatchireland.ie

Newcastle is easy to get to from Dublin by bus (number 84) and thus is an ideal location to live and commute to the city or indeed to take a break from the city and enjoy a stroll along the coast.

There is a country market weekly (Saturdays 10.30am-12.30pm ) held in the community hall offering home baked goods, arts and crafts and bric a brac gardeign plants, jams and chutneys

Local craftsman Brian Hackett designs beautiful simple and elegant jewellery pieces in his studio which is open daily. Visitors are welcome and should book ahead by phoning+353 1 2812924
