Visiting Tinahely:

Tinahely is perhaps most widely known for it’s popular annual agricultural show which draws crowds in their hundreds every summer – the first Monday in August. It is set in the beautiful rolling land surrounding the Derry river. This year (2008) the Secretary Mary Byrne is contactable on 0402 34922 for any queries you may have.

The ancient Tomnafinnoge woods are the largest standing oak woods in Ireland which provided the timber needed for the british navy ships and indeed the roof of Westminister hall. It is hoped that no more will be stripped from these woods as they relate to Irish folklore tales of warriors and kings.

Tinahely village itself is unusual in that the market square is of triangular shape and serves as the focal point of the village. The courthouse arts centre (originally the courthouse and the market house – now combined) and the local library surround the square.

The courthouse is a formidable building originating from 1843. The current arts centre housed within is a delight with concerts, films, exhibitions, shows, plays and much more on offer and up to date. You view their newly revamped wbsite here at www.tinahely-courthouse.ie

Other points of interest within the village include Black Toms cellar which dates from the 1600’s and The Old Mill Building.

The village offers all necessary services with a bank machine, bank, post office, supermarket and some nice cafes and places to eat. The local pub Seavers’ offers Traditional Irish Music weekly.

The village is part of the popular wicklow way walking route.
