Woodenbridge, Wicklow
Visiting Woodenbridge:
Woodenbridge is a popular tourist destination for those looking to take time out from the pressures of modern living. Hardly suprising when you see its located in the beautiful Vale of Avoca Co Wicklow with two rivers – the aughrim river and the avoca river meeting here (and again at the infamous ‘meeting of the waters’).
The Best Western run Woodenbridge Hotel and Lodge Wicklow, is a dependable place to stay or visit with entertainment in the bar most nights – particuarly in Summer but also throughout the winter. If the hired band/ singer doesn’t entertain you , rest assured that a few ‘ceoils’ from the Wicklow locals will! (what a sweet old man that sang when we were last there.!)
The Lodge is relatively new (2004) and is located across the road from the hotel. It houses 40 en suite rooms, lovely friendly staff and a very nice Italian restaurant. Food is also served in the hotel daily including bar food in the bar.

Local Wicklow amenities comprise of such natural joys as fishing (brown trout populate the Aughrim river), golfing - the woodenbridge golf club Wicklow is directly across from the hotel, making it an ideal golfers’ break and fabulous forest walks – the nearby Glenart forest Wicklow (now that’s natural to me) offers some truly memorable walks especially in late spring when the Rhodedendrons are in bloom.
Pony trekking, Shooting and Orienteering (Being a dog I am good at that as I have a great nose for trails and scents) are also popular amongst locals and visitors alike and the hotel offers the slightly unusual but enthralling package of a Wicklow Falconry stay where you get to spend a day doing falconry. Wow – I for one intend to try it out before the years’ end. As long as the falcon doesn’t use me as a catch!
Did I mention that this wicklow hotel is apparently the oldest in Ireland let alone Wicklow? (Don’t worry , they have updated their facilities). It dates from the 1600’s when it was originally a coach-house, ran all through the wicklow gold and copper mining period of the 17th century and is still going strong in the technological age that is today (big word for a small dog eh?). Well worth a wicklow visit.
